Memories of darkness

Technology is a bane and a boon.

When I was a kid and we had long power cuts, we turned to our dear friend ‘Candle’ (good-old-big-white-waxy ones and not your flimsy, sparkly birthday ones)

This beloved friend was carried everywhere in our home during the power cuts. Kitchen, Bedroom, study table (sometimes study floor), even our bathrooms. To make it sound fancy, we also used candle stands of various metals and designs.

When wind blew, we covered it using both our palms. When I was bored, I tried to touch the flame.

Oh, the way shadows danced on the walls!

Well, coming back to the present from the long gone past.

A few days ago, I was helping a kid with an assignment to write down uses of a candle. While I let her think through what a candle is used for, my natural flow of thoughts was, ‘Candle can be a source of light during power cuts’.

After a few seconds she told me her usage, ‘Candle is placed on top of a birthday cake’. I was amused by her answer. But this also made me think. Has the real usage of a simple candle become past? Have we forgotten this friend of ours?

When I mentioned my usage, she asked me what a power cut is and how she hasn’t witnessed one at all. All thanks to power back-up!

#MyPointOfView

Technology is essential for us millennials. Technology is getting bigger, better, meaner by the hour.

Technology makes our life better. Technology helps us capture moments.

But somewhere we are forgetting to be simple human beings. We are forgetting that moments like lighting a candle can be enjoyed without technology. We forget that candle was not just flimsy and sparkly but also big white and waxy!

Disclaimer: I will continue to enjoy the accessibility I have to technology and make the most of it. But, I will also try not to forget the smaller joys in life.
